The general quartic map is studied by symbolic dynamics in the three parameter space, joints are obtained in terms of the kneading theory. We describe the skeleton of superstable kneading sequences corresponding to a joint and all allowed superstable kneading sequences in the kneading space in details. A criterion for the existence of chaos has been given according to the topological entropy.
